Elektra Vaults Emptied For New Series

Collectors' Choice Music has set a Feb. 21 release date for reissues of 15 rarities from the Elektra archives, including material by Eric Clapton's supergroup Powerhouse, Lovin' Spoonful, Roxy, the Wackers and Phil Ochs. A number of the albums have never previously appeared on CD, and each reissue will feature liner notes from Elektra and Nonesuch founder Jac Holzman.

"What's Shakin'," a compilation from 1966 re-released on CD by Elektra in 1993, features four tracks from Lovin' Spoonful recorded while the band was considering signing with the label. Powerhouse, which combined the talents of Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Steve Winwood, Paul Jones and Manfred Mann, contributed "I Want to Know," "Crossroads" and "Steppin' Out," which were produced by Joe Boyd.

Songs from the Beefeaters, the Stalk-Forrest Group and Judy Collins are included on "Great Lost Elektra Singles, Vol. 1" a collection of non-LP singles. The Beefeaters, which was the earliest incarnation of the Byrds, contributes "Please Let Me Love you" and "Don't Be Long;" the Stalk-Forrest Group, which later became Blue Oyster Cult, provide "What is Quicksand?" and "Arthur Comics." Also featured is the previously unreleased Judy Collins recording "I'll Keep It With Me."

Canadian pop/rock group the Wackers will see all three of their releases reissued: "Wackering Heights" (1971), "Hot Wacks (1972) and "Shredder" (1973). Also headed back into print are singer/songwriter Phil Ochs' first two albums, 1964's "All the News That's Fit To Sing" and 1965's "I Ain't Marching Anymore."

The reissues are rounded out by albums from singer/songwriter Steve Noonan, comedian David Frye, the Charles River Valley Boys' 1966 bluegrass Beatles tribute "Beatle Country," Erik Darling, the Travelers 3, Cynthia Gooding and Theodore Bikel.
