Leading electronic artists have contributed exclusive tracks and mixes to an album protesting a possible war in Iraq, Billboard Bulletin reports. The two-CD set "The Fire This Time," to be released Dec. 2 through U.K. independent label Hidden Art, features music and narration from Orbital, Aphex Twin, Pan Sonic, Speedy J, and Michael Stearns, aimed at highlighting the impact Western trade sanctions have had on Iraqi civilians.
"'The Fire This Time' is a permanent record of the fate of Iraq, and a guide to the language of mass-media propaganda," says project organizer Grant Wakefield. "The album is designed to give ordinary Iraqi people a voice, to give Western audiences a crash course in what Professor Noam Chomsky calls 'intellectual self-defense,' and to reveal the astonishing brutality of the Gulf War and its aftermath."
Wakefield says the artists on the album "were simply contacted and asked if they would be willing to take part." About 80% of the set consists of music written exclusively for the project. For more information, visit the album's official Web site.
