Elastica Singer Joins Malkmus' Touring Band

Elastica frontwoman Justine Frischmann will join ex-Pavement lead singer Stephen Malkmus' touring band on guitar and keyboards this spring when Malkmus hits the road for his first-ever solo trek. Frischmann, who previously teamed with Malkmus to cover X's "Unheard Music" for the 1997 "Suburbia" soundtrack, made the announcement on BBC Radio host Steve Lamacq's show last week. Malkmus' self-titled solo debut drops Feb. 13 on Matador. The artist and his band -- which also includes drummer John Moen and bassist Joanna Bolme -- are scheduled to put their first public face on the new material with a special Jan. 25 performance at New York's Bowery Ballroom. The crowd is likely to consist of industry members, contest winners, and small sampling of the general public. A short tour of Europe is in the works for February, to be followed by a 30-date North American tour that will likely include an appearance alongside Mogwai and the reformed Soft Boys at the annual South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. After returning to Europe and hitting Japan, Malkmus and company will return to the States for a tour of smaller markets in late summer. It is not known if Frischmann will be on hand for these dates. Explaining the need for a fourth member, Malkmus recently told Billboard.com, "some of the songs, like 'Black Book,' are pretty dense. How many fuzz pedals do you hit to make it a little bit bigger? I'd love to be a power trio just for the purity of it, but I think we need someone else."
