British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran followed his two recent top ten U.K. singles with an instant No. 1 album as the Official Charts Company's new data was published Sunday (18). Sheeran's "+" opened at the top, while new boy band and former "X Factor" contestants One Direction notched an immediate No. 1 single with "What Makes You Beautiful."

Sheeran, who has hit big with his tracks "The A Team" and "You Need Me I Don't Need You," sold over 100,000 units of his first album to replace rapper/vocalist Example's "Playing in the Shadows" as the U.K.'s favorite album. With Adele's "21" steady at No. 2, the Example album fell to No. 3.

Critically lauded singer and writer Laura Marling matched the performance of her second album, last year's "I Speak Because I Can" by debuting at No. 4 with "A Creature I Don't Know." Her Virgin labelmates, English rock band Kooks, started at No. 10 with their third album "Junk of the Heart," from which the lead track "Is It Me" has been A-listed by national pop station BBC Radio 1. Dream Theater's "A Dramatic Turn of Events" entered at No. 17. "Now! That's What I Call Music 79" leads the compilation chart for the eighth week.

One Direction came together as a group on the suggestion of "X Factor" judge Nicole Scherzinger after Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Harry Styles and Zayn Malik met as individual contestants on the show. "What Makes You Beautiful" sold a healthy 153,000 copies to open at the singles summit, and the group's first album will follow later in the year.

Tony Bennett and Amy Winehouse's duet version of "Body and Soul," Winehouse's last recording before her death, charted at No. 40, ahead of the Monday (19) release of Bennett's "Duets II" album on which it is featured. That's the 85-year-old American crooner's first appearance in the top 40 of the U.K. singles chart since "The Very Thought of You" in 1965.
