Eclectic Artists 'Dressed In Black' For Cash Tribute

The Dualtone Music Group's Johnny Cash tribute album, "Dressed in Black," has been completed, with contributions from the likes of Hank Williams III, Rodney Crowell, the Mavericks' Raul Malo, Rosie Flores, Rev. Horton Heat, and Robbie Fulks, among others. Due Sept. 10, the set was co-produced by BR5-49's Chuck Mead and longtime Cash band member Dave Roe, who play acoustic guitar and standup bass, respectively, on all 18-tracks.

The track selection centers on classic songs, most of which stem from early in Cash's career -- 12 from the latter half of the 1950 from among his first 16 singles, four selections from the early to mid-'60s, and just two from the 1970s. Among those representing the artist's beginnings are Fulks' reading of "Cry Cry Cry," Cash's 1955 debut single for Memphis' Sun Records, and Flores' take on "Big River," which was the B-side to the 1958 single "Ballad of a Teenage Queen," covered here by Crowell.

Other gems tackled here include Damon Bramblett's version of "I'm Gonna Sit on the Porch and Pick On My Old Guitar" (from Cash's 1979's Columbia album "Silver"), and a duet on "Jackson" by Mead and Mandy Barnett (from 1967's "Carryin' on With Johnny Cash and June Carter").

Cash's longtime drummer W.S. Holland plays on Williams' version of the album's opening track, "Wreck of the Old '97," while pianist Earl Poole Ball (who played for Cash and Buck Owens, and recorded with the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and others) contributes his rendition of "I Still Miss Someone," from Cash's 1958's Columbia debut, "The Fabulous Johnny Cash."

As previously reported, "Dressed In Black" is the first of two Johnny Cash tribute albums due this year. On Sept. 24, Sony Nashville will release its long-awaited homage, "Kindred Spirits: A Tribute to the Songs of Johnny Cash," produced by the artist's former guitarist Marty Stuart. That set will boast contributions from Bruce Springsteen, Dwight Yoakam, Steve Earle, Shelby Lynne, Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris, and Travis Tritt, among others.
