David Bowie is one of the few veteran artists among the nominees for this year's Panasonic Mercury Music Prize, announced this morning (July 30) in London. U.K. television host and former Squeeze keyboardist Jools Holland revealed the 12 nominees at the city's Commonwealth Club. Bowie's latest Columbia/ISO album, "Heathen," debuted at No. 5 on the U.K. album chart in June.
While both Doves ("The Last Broadcast") and newcomer the Streets ("Original Pirate Material") are hotly tipped to win the award, this year's nominees champion diversity. Classical pianist Joanna MacGregor, jazz trumpeter Guy Barker, Irish singer/songwriter Gemma Hayes, and indie upstarts Electric Soft Parade all received nods, as did U.K. garage star Miss Dynamite, rock act the Coral, and hip-hop/dub producer Roots Manuva.
The nominees were culled from 180 albums, with only U.K. artists eligible for the award. The final tally excluded albums from more commercially visible acts, including Coldplay, Spiritualized, Cornershop, Primal Scream, and Pulp.
This year's winner will be announced at Sept. 17 ceremony in London. PJ Harvey's "Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea" took home last year's prize.
As previously reported, the unofficial U.S. edition of the Mercury Music Prize, the Shortlist, will be presented Oct. 29 in Los Angeles. This year's listmakers include Beck, Mos Def, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, Metallica's Lars Ulrich, India.Arie, the Strokes' Albert Hammond Jr. and Nick Valensi, and producers the Neptunes, among others. Sigur Ros' "Agaetis Byrjun" won the inaugural prize last year.
