The Dixie Chicks will welcome fellow trio the Thorns to open for them on their upcoming European and Australian tour dates. The alt-country leaning band of like-minded singer/songwriters -- Matthew Sweet, Shawn Mullins and Pete Droge -- recently completed a slate of U.S. dates opening for the Jayhawks.
Along with the Dixie Chicks dates, which kick off Sept. 6 in Stockholm, the Thorns will play a handful of club shows in Oslo, Copenhagen, London and Amsterdam. The group is also slated to tape an episode of the U.K. music television show "Top of the Pops 2."
The Thorns are touring in support of their self-titled debut album. Released in June, the Aware/Columbia set debuted at No. 62 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 81,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
The tour will bring the Dixie Chicks back to London, where they caused a firestorm earlier this year with a remark about U.S. President George W. Bush. In April singer Natalie Maines told an audience there that the group was "ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas." The group experienced a stateside backlash that resulted in country radio programmers pulling their songs in response to public reaction to the comment.
The Dixie Chicks' latest album, "Home," debuted on top of The Billboard 200 and the Top Country Albums chart. Currently 117 in its 48th week on the charts, the set has sold 5.5 million copies in the U.S.
