Dismemberment Plan Takes 'Change' On The Road

Washington, D.C.-based indie rock outfit the Dismemberment Plan has lined up an 18-date European tour to coincide with the Oct. 23 release of its fourth Desoto album, "Change." The trek begins tomorrow (Oct. 18) in Reykjavik and wraps up Nov. 10 in London, after which the group will hit 17 U.S. markets through early December. As was its predecessor, 1999's "Emergency & I," the new album was produced by J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines).

The 11-track set certainly lives up to the Plan's reputation for bending genres, balancing intense, dynamic rockers such as "Pay for the Piano" and "Time Bomb" alongside sublime groove workouts (opener "Sentimental Man," "Face of the Earth") and fascinating new sonic adventures ("Superpowers," the techno-leaning "The Other Side"). The powerful "Secret Curse" was inspired by the band's stint opening for Pearl Jam's 2000 summer European tour.

Frontman Travis Morrison points to the intricately structured "Face of the Earth" as representative of the new album's direction. "We wanted to have arrangements that shifted a lot more as the songs went by," he says. "Generally, that was a bit of a blind spot with us. We'd just bash out the songs, and the verses would sound exactly like the ones before them."

Meanwhile, the group is giving aspiring mixmasters the opportunity to remix songs from its own catalog. Individual tracks for several songs can be downloaded from the Plan's official Web site and then sent back to the band for evaluation. "There's one I would rate as great, and I heard parts of another one in progress that should be great," Morrison says of the early submissions, adding that superlative new versions may eventually be released commercially.
