Canadian vocalist Celine Dion and California-based rock act Incubus are the latest artists pledging large cash contributions to tsunami relief efforts in Eastern Africa and Southern Asia. Spanish-language broadcaster Telemundo is also planning a telethon event, which will feature Latin stars Gloria Trevi, Obie Bermudez and JD Natasha, as well as Madonna and Stevie Wonder.
• Dion will donate all of the proceeds from the Mother's Day (May 8) performance of "A New Day," her resident show at the Colosseum at Las Vegas' Caesars Palace. The artist anticipates to donate a minimum $1 million to UNICEF from the show. Ticket details have not yet been announced.
"I chose Mother's Day for this event, because of the special meaning it has for families, but also because it will help maintain the awareness of everyone's needs in South Asia, over the coming months," Dion says.
In addition to the Mother's Day initiative, special UNICEF donation boxes will be spread throughout the Colosseum through May to allow "A New Day" attendees to contribute to the cause.
• While other NBC Universal channels are airing "Tsunami Aid: A Concert of Hope" on Saturday (Jan. 15), the company's Spanish-language outlet Telemundo will host its own event, "Unidos con el Mundo: por las Victimas del Tsunami."
Hosted by the network's Candela Ferro, the show will feature performances by Trevi, Bermudez, Natasha, Oscar de Leon, Pablo Montero and Alejandra Guzman in Miami. In addition, the show will include performances from Madonna in London and Wonder in Los Angeles.
Also taking part will be Telemundo personalities Jorge Enrique Abello, Ivonne Montero, Natalia Streignard, Gabriela Spanic, Mario Cimarro, Alfonso de Anda, Esteban Arce, Natalia Villaveces, and Luisa Fernanda Lozano.
• Incubus is donating to the American Red Cross Tsunami Relief Fund $100,000 of the $400,000 its own Make Yourself Foundation raised this year.
"We started the MYF as a vehicle to try and help people who have not been as fortunate as us," the band says in a statement. "The magnitude of the tsunami disaster is truly overwhelming and we can only hope that this donation can help bring some relief to the people who've been affected by it."
In addition to the Tsunami relief effort, Incubus' Make Yourself Foundation will also make donations to Future Forests, the International Rett Syndrome Association, the Painted Turtle, the Surfrider Foundation, Operation Smile, Heal the Bay, the Institute of Music and Neurologic Function, Sweet Relief, Save the Music and Break the Cycle.
