Deluxe Femmes Reissue Adds 26 Tracks

The Violent Femmes' classic self-titled debut album will be reissued nearly 20 years after it was recorded as a double-disc, 36-track deluxe edition. Due June 18 from Slash Records/Rhino Entertainment, the new set will bolster the original 10-track "Violent Femmes" with a collection of U.K. singles and previously unreleased demos and live tracks.

Recorded in July 1982 by the original lineup of Gordon Gano (vocals/guitar), Brian Ritchie (bass), and Victor DeLorenzo (drums), "Violent Femmes" never reached The Billboard 200, but was certified platinum in 1991 by the Recording Industry Association of America for U.S. shipments of 1 million copies. The album includes a number of memorable songs that remain classics of the enduring band's canon, including "Kiss Off," "Add It Up," and "Prove My Love." DeLorenzo exited the band in 1992 and was replaced by Guy Hoffman.

On disc one, nine demo recordings follow the original album tracks, as well as the U.K. singles "Ugly" and "Gimme the Car." Disc two features 14 live tracks, 13 of which are previously unreleased. Only the live recording of "Special" was previously issued as a flexidisc in Alternative Press magazine.

The set, which will retail for $24.98, features liner notes by Michael Azzerad ("Our Band Could Be Your Life") to provide insight into the history of the band and the making of the record. A radio interview with Michael Feldman (currently host of the Wisconsin Public Radio/Public Radio International program "Whad'Ya Know?") rounds out the second disc.

In 1993, Slash surveyed the band's career with the label on the 23-track collection "Add It Up (1981-1993)," which debuted at No. 146 on The Billboard 200. Since then the band has recorded for Reprise, Elektra, Australian-based Cold Front, and, most recently, Beyond, which released the 1999 live set "Viva Wisconsin," and the 2000 studio set "Freak Magnet."
