Delights Fill Final Garcia, Grisman Disc

Spring will bring what is said to be the last disc of previously unreleased recordings late Grateful Dead guitarist/singer Jerry Garcia made with his friend, mandolinist David Grisman.

Due March 23 from Grisman's Acoustic Disc label, the 12-track "Been All Around This World" includes covers of songs by Bob Dylan, James Brown and Jimmie Rodgers' "The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest," Brown's "I'll Go Crazy" and Merle Travis' "Dark as a Dungeon" and "Nine Pound Hammer." Songs by George Jones, Freddie Hart and Mel Tillis are also featured, as are the traditionals "I'm Troubled," "Handsome Cabin Boy" and the title track.

A version of Rodgers' "Blue Yodel #9," captured during Garcia's final recording session, features an alternate band made up of bassist John Kahn, drummer George Marsh and premiere dobro player Sally Van Meter.

Friends and contemporaries since the late 1960s, Grisman and Garcia didn't begin recording together until the 1990s. Acoustic Disc has released five previous albums culled from their more than 40 sessions; the 2001 documentary "Grateful Dawg" -- directed by Grisman's daughter, Gillian --chronicles their musical relationship.

Through the end of the year, Grisman has a handful of dates on tap with his Quintet and the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience. The former will play Friday (Dec. 12) in San Francisco and New Year's Eve in Columbus, Ohio. The latter has shows set for Dec. 28 in Berkeley, Calif., and the following night in Mill Valley, Calif.
