Freebass, the rock act featuring former Joy Division/New Order bass player Peter Hook, Mani from the Stone Roses/Primal Scream and Andy Rourke of the Smiths, is planning to release its as-yet-untitled debut album in March 2009.
"It's going to be out next March or I am going to f*cking top myself," a jovial Hook told Billboard at the Tony Wilson Experience, a 24-hour celebration of the late Factory Records boss, which took place in Manchester June 21-22.
"I'm f*cking sick of talking about it," he continued. "I just want to give someone some music. I said to Mani and Andy Rourke: 'It's coming out and I don't care how rough it is. F*ck it - let's do some gigs.'"
Hook explained that the band, which also features Gary Briggs, the former singer with Manchester-based band Haven, have completed eight songs that, rather unsurprisingly sound like, "a cross between Joy Division, New Order, the Stone Roses, [the] Smiths, Primal Scream with a load of reggae and northern soul thrown in."
Liam Gallagher (Oasis), Ian Brown (the Stone Roses), Tim Burgess (the Charlatans), Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) and Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream) have all been previously mooted by Hook as guest vocalists for the project.
Citing his DJing commitments as one of the reasons why Freebass has been slow to progress, Hook said playing live was the thing that he missed the most and that he intends the band to "definitely" tour around the time of its debut release.
