Director David Lynch has released new original music via iTunes: a synth-heavy dance track called "Good Day Today" and a brooding bluesy number called "I Know."


The revered auteur, whose films have inspired many eclectic soundtracks, handles both vocals and production duties on the tracks, the former of which was mistaken for electronic group Underworld by KCRW DJ Jason Bentley a few months back.


It was Bentley that brought the music to the attention of Sunday Best Recordings, the label founded in 1995 by BBC Radio One DJ Rob da Bank, who signed the tracks for worldwide distribution. The label plans to release additional remixes and a full-length in January 2011, featuring artwork by Vaughan Oliver (Pixies Doolittle, Breeders Pod).

Far from his first foray into music, Lynch shared a Best Pop Instrumental Grammy in 1991 with composer Angelo Badalamenti for "Falling," the theme to Twin Peaks, and more recently collaborated on the album Dark Night of the Soul with Sparklehorse and Danger Mouse. He also started his own label, David Lynch MC, in 2008, signing Afghani singer Ariana Delawari.

Said Lynch in a statement released on Monday: "In all my films, I have always been very involved with all that one hears. The creation of this record was a natural extension of my love of sound and music… This feels like a good partnership and I'm looking forward to everyone having a good day today."
