Crazy Frog Outpaces Coldplay In U.K.

The novelty single "Axel F" (Gusto) by Crazy Frog upstaged Coldplay's "Speed of Sound" (Parlophone) on yesterday's (May 29) new U.K. singles chart by beating it to No. 1. The track, one of several to emerge from the "frog ringtone" craze, is based around Harold Faltermeyer's 1985 hit of the same name, and is the creation of Wolfgang Boss and Reinhardt Raith, the latter also a member of dance producers Bass Bumpers.

EMI's Parlophone label did however succeed in securing the No. 1 position on the new album chart, as "Demon Days" by Gorillaz went straight to the top.

The Coldplay single entered the singles list at No. 2 while Amerie's current U.S. chart success "1 Thing" (Columbia) started at No. 4 and "Hollaback Girl" (Interscope) by Gwen Stefani came in at No. 8.

"Shot You Down" (Source) by Audio Bullys featuring Nancy Sinatra debuted at No. 9. Made up of London house producers Tom Franks and Simon Dinsdale, Audio Bullys sample Sinatra's 1960s recording of Sonny Bono's, "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)," previously a hit for Cher. It's Sinatra's first appearance in the British singles top 10 since "Did You Ever," her duet with Lee Hazlewood, reached No. 2 in 1971.

The U.K. album chart also included a No. 3 debut for "Invisible Invasion" (Deltasonic) by Liverpool modern rock act the Coral and an 11-4 climb for "Back to Bedlam" by English singer/songwriter newcomer James Blunt. Audioslave's "Out of Exile" (Epic/Interscope) opened at No. 5.

On the composite European charts, System Of A Down's "Mezmerize" (American/Columbia) arrived at No. 1 on the European Top 100 Albums tally, while Akon's "Lonely" (SRC/Universal) rose 3-1 in its third week on the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles list.
