Country Vet Wagoner Preps New Release

Country legend Porter Wagoner will be releasing his next album on June 5 via Anti-. "Wagonmaster" is helmed by famed producer and musician Marty Stuart.

One feature of the 17-track set is a cover of Johnny Cash's "Committed to Parkview," which Cash personally hand-selected for Porter to one day perform. "In 1981, I was on tour with Cash in Europe, and I had a Porter tape and played it for Cash, and he and I got into a Porter listening marathon. And Cash said, 'I got a song for Porter' -- because they had both been guests [at the Parkview Health hospital] --and he gave me an envelope with a cassette in it to take to him," says Stuart. "Well, we got home and I forgot all about it, but when we were choosing material for ['Wagonmaster'], I remembered and finally found it.?

Wagoner also sings a new version of "My Many Hurried Southern Trips," a song he previously wrote with Dolly Parton. Other covers include "Who Knows Right from Wrong," "Eleven Cent Cotton" and "A Place to Hang My Hat."

The 79-year-old singer/songwriter will take the stage March 30 to preview new material at New York's Joe's Pub.

On Feb. 8, Wagoner performed at the Grammy Foundation's Soul of Country concert in Los Angeles, his first show in that city in nearly 40 years. On Feb. 17, he performed as the unannounced opener for Neko Case at Hollywood's Henry Fonda Theatre, backed by Stuart on guitar and mandolin, Dwight Yoakam on bass and Billy Bob Thornton on drums.
