Politically charged hard rock act Corporate Avenger has hit the road in support of its debut full-length album, "Freedom is a State of Mind," released yesterday (July 24) by Suburban Noize/Koch Records. Supported by fellow Southern California-based act Insolence, which is touring behind its Warner Bros. debut set "Revolution," Corporate Avenger plays tomorrow in St. Louis, and has dates scheduled through Aug. 17 in West Hollywood, Calif.
Controversy has surrounded the release of "Freedom." The band has received threats and angry correspondence stemming from its songs "The Bible is Bullsh*t," "Christians Murdered Indians," "Jesus Christ Homosexual," and "Taxes Are Stealing." In its defense, the band writes in the liner notes of the CD's booklet, "Corporate Avenger are a group of artists committed to artistic expression, inspired by the understanding that life is a sacred gift... The songs are written in the language we speak every day, it is not intended to be offensive. While this message is for everyone, this record may not be."
In addition to the threats, because of the succession of the words "The Bible is Bullsh*t," cable television networks MTV, Comedy Central, and E! each refused to air a Corporate Avenger television commercial in some major markets, while others will only air the spot after 10 p.m.
Corporate Avenger is offering a free video to those who purchase the album by July 31. To receive the tape -- which features music and interview footage -- consumers must send a copy of their receipt to the Suburban Noize offices. Details of the promotion are available on the band's official Web site.
