Conan O'Brien ended his short-lived gig as host of NBC's "Tonight Show" on Friday night (Jan. 22), and the comedian went out with a star-studded episode that featured two memorable musical numbers.

First, O'Brien brought out special guest Neil Young for a moving performance of "Long May You Run." O'Brien mentioned that Young was the first person to call him and show support when his troubles with NBC and Jay Leno first started just two weeks ago.

As his last "Tonight Show" episode wound down, O'Brien graciously thanked NBC for a long and -- until recently, at least -- successful partnership, then took the stage for a surprise cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" with some of his close friends. Will Ferrell took care of lead vocal and cowbell duties while O'Brien played guitar alongside Beck, ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, Ben Harper on lap-steel guitar and his own "Tonight Show" house band, Jimmy Vivino and the Max Weinberg 7.

When all was said and done, it was a powerful way for O'Brien to end his "Tonight Show" run -- most of all, because it seemed to be exactly on his own terms.
