New Year's Day 2012 brought a new U.K. No. 1 for Coldplay with "Paradise" and a return to the album chart summit for Ed Sheeran's debut album "+."

The Coldplay single first charted in early November, debuting and apparently peaking at No. 14, but hit the top ten for the first time in mid-December, and climbed 5-1 on the Official Charts Company's new charts published Sunday (Jan. 1). "Paradise" sold 108,000 units last week to take its 10-week total to 528,000 as its parent album "Mylo Xyloto" moved 4-3. Coldplay's only previous U.K. No. 1 single was "Viva La Vida" in 2008.

The former No. 1 "Dance With Me Tonight" by Olly Murs climbed back 6-2, with 76,000 new sales, and Flo Rida's "Good Feeling" 7-3, as the Christmas bestseller "Wherever You Are" by the Military Wives with Gareth Malone fell 1-4. Another previous chart-topper, "We Found Love" by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris, rebounded 10-5.

Yorkshire-born singer-songwriter Sheeran, who turns 21 next month, debuted at No. 1 with "+" in September. It surged 9-1 on the new album chart on new sales of 47,000, as its singles "Lego House" and "The A Team" moved back 14-7 and 45-17 respectively. Bruno Mars' "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" jumped 11-2 (44,000 sales), the week before it celebrates a year on the U.K. chart. The festive champion, Michael Bublé's "Christmas," crashed to No. 15. "Now! That's What I Call Music 80" continues its compilation chart reign, which now extends to six weeks.
