Coldplay, Atomic Kitten Lead U.K. Charts

Coldplay and Atomic Kitten retained leadership of the U.K. albums and singles charts respectively yesterday (Sept. 8). The hottest new names on the surveys were Leeds-based rock quartet the Music with its debut album and Appleton with its first single.

Coldplay's "A Rush of Blood to the Head" (Parlophone) started a second week at No. 1 on the album list, with the Music's self-titled Hut/Virgin debut arriving at No. 4 in the wake of the group's recent top-20 single "Take the Long Road and Walk It." Rhino's retrospective of chart veterans Chicago, "The Chicago Story," entered at No. 11, the band's best (and first) U.K. showing since a previous collection, "The Heart of Chicago," reached No. 6 in 1989.

Another erstwhile chart name making a new appearance was 1987-1991 U.K. hitmaker Rick Astley, whose "Greatest Hits" (BMG) debuted at No. 16, his first album on the tally since "Free" hit No. 9 some 11 years ago. The achievement was heightened by comparison to another "Greatest Hits" released last week by the more critically favored, and more recently popular, Welsh rock band Catatonia (blanco y negro), which only entered at No. 24.

Sisters Nicole and Natalie Appleton, former All Saints members now recording for Polydor as Appleton, debuted at No. 2 on the singles chart with "Fantasy," but couldn't stop pop trio Atomic Kitten from starting a second week at No. 1 with its cover of Blondie's "The Tide Is High" (Innocent/Virgin). Atomic Kitten's second album, "Feels So Good," is released in the U.K. today.

There were also top-10 singles entries for dance act N-Trance with "Forever" (All Around The World) at No. 6 and Paul Weller with "It's Written in the Stars" (Independiente) at No. 7. The latter is the veteran modern rocker's highest chart entry, and his first top-10 hit, since "Peacock Suit" reached No. 6 in 1996.

Across Europe, Eminem's "Without Me" (Interscope/Polydor) racked up yet another week atop Music & Media's Eurochart Hot 100 Singles, bringing its run to 15 consecutive weeks. The Coldplay album went straight to the top of the magazine's European Top 100 Albums chart, reflecting No.1 entries not only in the U.K. last week but Germany, Italy, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, and Ireland.
