Cliff Conjures New 'Magic'

Artemis Records has signed veteran reggae artist Jimmy Cliff. His new album, "Black Magic," will be released Aug. 24. Produced by Dave Stewart, the set features contributions from Sting, Annie Lennox, Wyclef Jean, Jools Holland, Kool & the Gang, tennis player Yannick Noah and, as previously reported, one of the last recordings by the late Joe Strummer.

Cliff has recorded for labels that include Reprise and Columbia since the 1975 release of his landmark album "The Harder They Come" (Mango). Says Artemis president Danny Goldberg, "'Black Magic' is the best album Jimmy Cliff has done since 'The Harder They Come.' It is an incredible honor for everyone at Artemis Records that he has chosen to bring it to our company and to sign with us."

Cliff has lately been active in AIDS awareness campaigns around the world. He made an appearance at Nelson Mandela's 4664 AIDS November 2003 benefit concert in Cape Town, South Africa, recordings of which were released as a triple-disc set in April by Warner Music International.
