Ciara Dethrones Elvis On U.K. Singles Chart

Comments

After two consecutive weeks in which Elvis Presley reissues topped the U.K. singles chart, there was a surprise on yesterday's (Jan. 23) new survey when RCA's latest Presley re-release, "A Fool Such As I," was beaten to the top in a late surge by "Goodies" (Jive), the U.S. smash by Ciara featuring Petey Pablo. The Presley single, which had been leading in midweek chart data, debuted at No. 2.

In a singles chart first, the top six were all new entries, with the Chemical Brothers' "Galvanize" (Virgin) debuting at No. 3 and rock band Athlete scoring by far its biggest hit to date as "Wires" entered at No. 4. Fellow British rock act Feeder opened at No. 5 with "Tumble and Fall" (Echo), followed by English singer/songwriter Lucie Silvas at No. 6 with "Breathe In" (Mercury).

The other top 10 debutant was the dance-pop track "Take Me Away" by Stonebridge featuring Therese (Hed Kandi), while former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown's "Time Is My Everything" (Fiction) entered at No. 15.

Presley's "One Night," which topped the chart last week, crashed to No. 20, an indication of the limited edition nature of the Presley reissues, which have been selling out within one or two days on sale. RCA's pressing run for the singles has been increased from 30,000 to 35,000.

On the U.K. album chart, the Killers' "Hot Fuss" (Lizard King) started a second week at the top. The survey showed an unchanged top five, with "Scissor Sisters" (Polydor) still at No. 2 and Green Day's "American Idiot" at No. 3. Damien Rice's "O" (DRM/14th Floor) made a big 24-8 climb. The highest new entry was British rock band Thirteen Senses' "The Invitation" (Vertigo) at No. 14.

The pan-European charts showed Eric Prydz' "Call on Me" (Data/Ministry of Sound) at No. 1 for a fourth aggregate week on the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles tally, while Robbie Williams' "Greatest Hits" (Chrysalis) tops the European Top 100 Albums chart for the ninth time in its 13-week chart run.
