Chestnut Updates 'Charlie Brown Christmas'

Acclaimed pianist/composer Cyrus Chestnut will release his updated version of the Vince Guaraldi Trio's 1965 album companion to the "A Charlie Brown Christmas" television special Sept. 19 via Atlantic.

The album features vocals from Vanessa Williams and the Boys Choir of Harlem on the song "Christmas Time Is Here," Brian McKnight on "The Christmas Song," and the Manhattan Transfer on "What Child Is This?"

Outside of new takes on the dozen songs from the original release, the album also includes a Chestnut-composed solo piano tribute to late Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, "Me & Charlie Brown." Produced by Ed and Guy Eckstine, "A Charlie Brown Christmas" features the core trio of Chestnut, drummer Steve Gadd, and bassist Christian McBride, with a host of guests, including Steve Cole, Kenny Garrett, and Michael Brecker.

Chestnut is scheduled to play a headlining stint at New York's Blue Note jazz nightclub Dec. 13-24. His 1998 eponymous album peaked at No. 5 on Billboard's Top Jazz Albums chart.
