'Caution': Hot Water Music Heats Up

Acclaimed post-punk outfit Hot Water Music will release its second Epitaph album on Oct. 22. Titled "Caution," the Gainesville, Fla.-based quartet's 12-song disc was produced by Brian McTernan (Promise Ring, Snapcase), who also manned the studio for the group's previous set, 2000's "A Flight and a Crash." That album reached No. 49 on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart.

"We definitely feel better about this record than anything else we've ever done," bassist Jason Black tells Billboard.com from the Vancouver stop on the Vans Warped Tour. "We spent a lot of time writing these songs, really killing ourselves on them. Working with Brian for the second album in a row made it a lot easier. We're all familiar with one another now which made it a much smoother process."

Matching the spirit of punk with the skill of accomplished rock'n'roll, the material varies from the cathartic, Fugazi-like "I Was on a Mountain," to the Eddie Van Halen-inspired "It's All Related." Says Black, "We've always considered ourselves to be a band that adheres to certain punk ethics, but musically we've never really wanted to define ourselves at all. Besides -- the term 'punk' has kind of lost it's meaning. It's more about hair color, which kind of sucks."

Black and his bandmates -- drummer George Rebelo and singers/guitarists Chuck Ragan and Chris Wollard -- will wrap up their 2002 Warped Tour responsibilities Aug. 5 at their home state's Jacksonville Raceway. Hot Water then heads off on a month-long trek through Europe beginning Aug. 16 in Cologne, Germany. A North American headlining tour is being slated to coincide with the release of "Caution."

Earlier this year, the group teamed with fellow underground colleagues Alkaline Trio for a split EP, which landed at No. 36 on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart.
