Can Regroups For Czukay's Solo Set

Holger Czukay, co-founder of the celebrated experimental rock band Can, enlists the talents of his former bandmates on his latest solo effort, "Good Morning Story." To be released June 22, the Tone Casualties set is "a collection of songs and a test journey through some forged ethno worlds," according to Czukay, who plays guitar, bass, trumpet mouthpiece, short waves, synthesizer, and sampler on the album. Original Can members Jaki Liebezeit (drums), Irmin Schmidt (keyboards), and Michael Karoli (guitar) appear on numerous tracks, as does bassist Jah Wobble and vocalist U-She. The album's material, created between 1991 and 1999, includes several pieces based on Can samples.

"Good Morning Story" is Czukay's first solo album in six years, having been preceded by 1993's "Moving Pictures." Mute recently reissued that set, along with Czukay's 1982 disc "On The Way To The Peak Of Normal."

As earlier reported, Mute will also release a Can multimedia package this spring. Dubbed "The Can Box," the lavish 2CD/illustrated book/video package will street in April in the U.K. and May 18 in the U.S. Spoon Records, Can's own Cologne-based label, will issue the package in Germany.

Post-rock acts and rock'n'rave bands have sparked a renewed interest in Can, which recorded the bulk of its material in the late '60s/early '70s. In 1997, amid a flurry of Can-related activity that included Czukay's first U.S. solo tour, Mute issued "Sacrilege," a double album of Can remixes by Sonic Youth, UNKLE, the Orb, Pete Shelley, and others.
