J.J. Cale, Mavis Staples, Alvin Youngblood Hart, and Bob Weir and Charlie Musselwhite will contribute new songs to "Fish Tree Water Blues," a compilation album benefiting Earthjustice Legal Defense Fund. The album, due April 6, also will feature Ani DiFranco, John Lee Hooker, Robert Cray, London Wainwright III, Keb' Mo', Tracy Nelson, and Etta James. A benefit concert with Cray, Musselwhite, and Nelson will be held Earth Day, April 22, at San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium.
Speaking of John Lee Hooker, the venerable bluesman is giving back the $20,000 he receives as part of his Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm & Blues Foundation. Hooker said in a statement that he is returning the honorarium "to help those who need the help right now." Hooker was presented with the honor yesterday in Los Angeles.
