The compilation was assembled by Cajun music authority Ann Savoy, who collaborated with producer T Bone Burnett on the Creole infused soundtrack to the 2002 film "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood."
The follow-up to 2002's similarly themed, Savoy-produced "Evangeline Made," the new set finds artists interpreting music with roots in the cultures of Louisiana natives, Haitian immigrants and Texas blues.
Backed by Nathan & the Zydeco Cha-Chas, Lauper remakes the band's own "Festival Zydeco" and revamps Clifton Chenier's "Allons À Grand Coteau." The band, sans Lauper, also recasts Chenier's "Zydeco Two-Step" and "I'm Coming Home." On the latter track, noted Cajun artists Keith Frank, Rosie Ledet and Sean Ardoin join the group.
Tom Tom Club reworks Frank's "Only the Strong Survive" for "Creole Bred," while bluesman Mahal adds his spice to Canray Fontenot's "Two-Step de Grand Mallet" and the Fontenot/Alphonse Ardoin track "'Tit Monde."
