Jimmy Buffett closed out his summer tour over the weekend at a venue almost as attached to the season as he is: Chicago's Wrigley Field, where the singer-songwriter and his Coral Reefer Band played a night-day doubleheader Sunday night and Monday afternoon in the first rock concerts ever to be held at the revered ballpark.

Midway through yesterday's two-and-a-half-hour show, Buffett, a longtime Cubs fan, said the idea was hatched appropriately enough "in a bar about seven years ago," and thanked the city of Chicago and the Cubs for making it happen.

A native of the Gulf Coast, Buffett dedicated a sizeable portion of his set to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, signing a Cubs jersey at the front of the show and announcing that it would be auctioned off on eBay with the proceeds going to the Red Cross.

For added spice, he dusted off the festive New Orleans-themed riff "I Will Play for Gumbo," the winking Gulf Coast reminiscence "The Pascagoula Run" and "City of New Orleans," the newly poignant ballad penned by Chicago singer/songwriter Steve Goodman. Introducing the song, Buffett pointedly dedicated it to the victims and "fellow Americans" devastated by the storm's effects.

But it being a Buffett show, there was only so much time for the consideration of the real world. "We got Jimmy Buffett into Wrigley Field," he said early in the first of two sets, "We sure as hell can rebuild New Orleans!"

Crowds totaled over 87,000 for the two sold-out performances. "And you never know," Buffett smirked at the end of the afternoon, "We might just do it again."
