Brits Get A Kick Out Of Como

Quintessential American crooner Perry Como looks set for a return to the U.K. charts with BMG's Monday (May 24) release of "Papa Loves Mambo: The Very Best of Perry Como." It's prompted by the use of the title song in a Nike soccer commercial, "The Other Game," which features some of the world's greatest players displaying their skills.

"Papa Loves Mambo" was a fleeting No. 16 entry on the British charts in December 1954. In the United States, it reached No. 4 and was certified gold. The 24-track album also includes such major hits as "Don't Let the Stars Get in Your Eyes," "Magic Moments," "It's Impossible" and "And I Love You So."

Como, who died in 2001, enjoyed his last substantial U.K. album chart success in late 1975 and early 1976, when a "40 Greatest Hits" collection spent a remarkable six weeks at No. 1.

The Nike deal was negotiated through BMG U.K.'s Network Enterprises division, which was also responsible for placing Elvis Presley's "A Little Less Conversation," remixed by Junkie XL, in Nike's 2002 World Cup commercial.
