Blue October Tapping 'Song Piggy Bank' For New CD

Currently on its last go-round for its platinum-selling major label debut "Foiled," Blue October is starting to eyeball its fifth studio album.

Drummer Jeremy Furstenfeld tells Billboard.com that after wrapping up its Sorry Boy Burns Bright Tour in November and then playing a few radio station shows, the Austin, Texas, quintet plans to hit the studio early in the new year to "put down some songs we've been writing on the road and write some new ones and see what happens."

Furstenfeld says Blue October has worked up "six or seven new songs from sound check and stuff," and that there are also "pieces of new songs people come up with while sitting on the bus, little hooks or leads or guitar riffs." The group also has "a kind of song piggy bank" to draw from. "There's probably 50 or 60 in there from back in the day," the drummer says.

Until then, however, Blue October is enjoying a kind of "victory lap" to celebrate its breakthrough with "Foiled," which comes after four independently released albums. The sales tally continues to increase -- thanks to a new edition of the album, "Foiled For the Last Time," which features a live show on an added second CD -- and Furstenfeld says the band members have their platinum plaques proudly hanging on their walls.

"Never in our lifetime did we ever think we'd be platinum-selling artists," he notes. "That's just not something we've been making music for. We've always wanted to get our music out there to as many people as possible, and this time we're really blessed people picked up on singles like 'Hate Me' and 'Into the Ocean,' and we have platinum records. We may never have another one again, but we got to do it this time, and that's cool."
