Billboard Bows New Electronic Chart

Comments

Billboard.com today (July 19) introduces a brand-new chart that lists the most-popular electronic music albums in the U.S. The Top Electronic Albums chart runs 10 positions deep and uses SoundScan data to identify the best-selling titles in this growing genre.

The initial No. 1 title on the Electronic Albums list is "Totally Dance," a compilation album marketed by Arista Records and featuring tracks by Faithless, Dido, Moby, Pink, Eden's Crush, Toni Braxton, and other stars. At No. 2 is the Elektra/EEG soundtrack to "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider." (Billboard has been compiling the new chart for several weeks prior to publication. The current chart reflects chart positions in those unpublished weeks).

The Electronic Albums chart is one of three new charts introduced in print this week as part of Billboard magazine's landmark redesign. The other new charts -- Top Soundtracks and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Catalog Albums -- are included in the "members area" of Billboard.com, as is the full, 15-position Electronic Albums chart.

Subscribers to the members area also will find some new editorial features from the magazine, including two chart-analysis features: "Over The Counter" and "Singles Minded." There is also a new personality-focused section called the "Billboard BackBeat."

As part of the magazine's redesign, several charts have been expanded. The Latin albums list is stretched to 75 titles and each Latin albums genre chart (Regional Mexican, Tropical/Salsa) expands to 20 positions. The Latin singles charts also are longer. And the Top Internet Album Sales tally goes from 20 to 25 positions.

This historic issue of Billboard hits newsstands on Saturday (July 21).
