Billboard Bits: Randy Newman, Trapt/Shinedown, Joan Jett

Comments

Steve Earle, Allison Moorer, Guster, Bela Fleck and the Del McCoury Band are among the artists recasting songs penned by Randy Newman on the tribute album "Sail Away: The Songs of Randy Newman." Due May 9 via Sugar Hill, the 12-track set was produced by Steve Fishell (Dixie Chicks, the Mavericks).

Earle takes on "Rednecks," while Tim O'Brien handles the title cut and Marc Broussard puts his stamp on "You Can Leave Your Hat On." Missing from the collection are the only songs Newman ever charted on the Billboard Hot 100: 1977's "Short People" (No. 2), 1983's "The Blues" with Paul Simon and 1988's "It's Money That Matters."

Here is the track list for "Sail Away":

"Sail Away," Tim O'Brien
"Louisiana 1927," Sonny Landreth
"Birmingham," Del McCoury Band
"Rider in the Rain," Reckless Kelly and Joe Ely
"Marie," Allison Moorer
"Rednecks," Steve Earle
"Burn On," Bela Fleck
"Mr. President (Have Pity on the Working Man)," Sam Bush
"Memo to My Son," Guster
"Political Science," the Duhks
"You Can Leave Your Hat On," Marc Broussard
"Texas Girl at the Funeral of Her Father," Kim Richey

Rock acts Trapt and Shinedown will team up for the Equinox tour, opening April 19 in Johnstown, Pa. Halestorm and Mercy Fall have been tapped to support the run, which will close May 24 in Las Vegas.

Trapt is out behind "Someone in Control" (Warner Bros.), which bowed at No. 14 on The Billboard 200, while Shinedown is supporting "Us & Them" (Atlantic). The discs were released within weeks of one another last fall and have sold 263,000 and 318,000 copies in the United States respectively, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

In addition to the tour, Shinedown will perform Friday (April 14) on CBS' "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" and DirecTV's "CD USA" two days later.

Joan Jett will release her next album with the Blackhearts, "Sinner," June 6 via her own Blackhearts label. The set features a guest appearance from Le Tigre's Kathleen Hanna on the tracks "Watersign," "Five" and "Tube Talkin'." It's Jett first's studio album since 1994's "Pure and Simple" and will be supported by a previously announced stint on this summer's Vans Warped Tour.

In addition, Jett will begin reissuing her back catalog this summer with enhanced versions of 1981's "Bad Reputation" and 1993's "Evil Stig," recorded with the surviving members of Seattle punk outfit the Gits.
