Billboard Bits: Mike Wallace/Pat., COC, and more

Journalist Mike Wallace best known as a principal figure on CBS' news magazine "60 Minutes," but he'll be able to add pop star to his credentials if Pat Harris, a researcher on the show, has any say. Harris, who records under the name Pat. (Patperiod), tapped the 82-year-old Wallace to sing with him on the single "The Girl (She's Mine)," a duet due out Nov. 14 on his own Pajaha Publishing label.

Described as a swinging, big band-style song, "The Girl (She's Mine)" will also appear on Pat.'s forthcoming album, "American Dreamer," due out in March. For more information on the artist, as well as photos from the recording session, visit his official Web site.

A back injury has forced Corrosion Of Conformity drummer Reed Mullin to pull out of the band's upcoming tour. In his place, COC has tapped Eyehategod guitarist and Crowbar/Down drummer Jimmy Bower to fill in on the U.S. trek in support of the recently released Sanctuary album "America's Volume Dealer." On some dates of the tour, which kicks off Nov. 15 in Winston-Salem, N.C., Bower will also play guitar with support act the Mystick Krewe Of Clearlight.

Through the upcoming weeks, Mullin will undergo "various procedures" to correct his back problems and "hopefully avoid major surgery," according to a statement from the band.

Mullin joins an elite group of rockers who have been sidelined with back injuries in 2000. Former Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page's chronic back ailments forced an early finish to his tour with the Black Crowes, while Metallica's James Hetfield was forced to miss several shows on the band's Summer Sanitarium tour due to a back injury. Interestingly, once Hetfield recovered, Metallica staged free make-up gigs in the cities where he couldn't play, and asked longtime friends COC to open those shows.

Film director Darren Aronofsky ("Pi" and "Requiem For A Dream") has produced the screen visuals for DJ/producer Paul Oakenfold's upcoming U.S. performances. The mind-altering visuals will make their premiere Nov. 23 at Oakenfold's "Trancegiving" show at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom, but they will then be put into hiding until Oakenfold embarks on his U.S. tour in early 2001.

Oakenfold's new London/Sire album, "Perfecto Presents Another World," debuted at No. 2 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart last month and has already sold more than 42,000 copies in the U.S., according to SoundScan.
