Diana Ross, B.B. King, Bernadette Peters, the late Tito Puente, producer/executive Phil Ramone, and music publishing executive Frank Military of Warner/Chappell will be honored Dec. 5 at the New York chapter of the Recording Academy's fifth New York Heroes Awards. Proceeds from the event will support the chapter's educational initiatives.
Billboard editor in chief Timothy White; artists Tony Bennett, Celia Cruz, and Mary J. Blige; composer Philip Glass; and Tommy Boy Records chairman/CEO Tom Silverman were honored at last year's ceremony.

New York high school students will have the opportunity to win a private concert with Mandy Moore, BBMak, and Pink on Oct. 25 at New York's Webster Hall. The "School Spirit" contest, sponsored by New York radio station Z100 and Cosmo Girl magazine, can be entered from the Z100 Web site through Oct. 15. The station reports that more than 2 million entries have already been submitted.
Z100 has sponsored a host of free concerts in the New York area in recent years, including performances by Alanis Morissette and All Saints. Previous "School Spirit" concerts have featured Christina Aguilera, LFO, and 98 Degrees.
