Billboard Bits: John Cale, Blues&Brews, George Winston

Comments

CaleFormer Velvet Underground principal John Cale will release a new album, "Black Acetate," Sept. 12 in the U.K. via EMI. The 13-track set is led by the single "Turn the Lights On," which will hit digital download outlets on Aug. 1. The album is said to be more guitar-driven than its predecessor, last year's acclaimed "HoboSapiens."

Fresh off a performance in London at the Patti Smith-curated Meltdown Festival, Cale is planning a European tour to kick off in September.

GeorgePianist George Winston's 1991 album "Summer" will be reissued Sept. 13 via Windham Hill/Legacy. The set will now include the previously unreleased track "Old Friends," as well as viewable/printable sheet music for an as-yet-unannounced song.

Released eight years after Winston's last prior seasonal-themed release, "Summer" peaked at No. 1 on Billboard's Top New Age Albums chart and spent 107 weeks on the tally. It has sold more than 912,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Winston will begin a fresh round of touring July 9 in Boulder, Colo. A number of shows on his upcoming itinerary are either solo guitar or harmonica benefit concerts.
