Billboard Bits: Dan Hicks, Q-Tip, Burning Spear, Royal Trux

The eclectic, legendary Dan Hicks has revived his group, the Hot Licks, to release "Beatin' The Heat," the first new studio album from the act since 1976's "It Happened One Bite," due August 15 via Surfdog Records.

Produced by musician Gary Hoey and Surfdog founder Dave Kaplan, the 15-track acoustic set features guest appearances by Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Rickie Lee Jones, and Bette Midler, all of whom contribute vocals to various tracks. Brian Setzer plays guitar on two songs.

Founded in the late 60's in San Francisco, the Hot Licks found their biggest success following the 1973 release "Last Train To Hicksville." Since that time, Hicks has dissolved and reformed the group several times, and has continued to tour solo. He has also written and produced music for cable network HBO, and has sung, produced, and performed in various commercials.

Former A Tribe Called Quest rapper Q-Tip (real name: Jonathan Davis; Muslim name: Kamaal Fareed) pleaded guilty to a charge of assault in the third degree in New York City Court yesterday (June 26). Fareed was sentenced to an unconditional discharge and ordered to pay $120 in court costs and fees.

The charge stemmed from an incident in which he attacked aspiring rapper Kenrick Miranda in a New York music store in March. Shortly after the incident, Miranda told the New York Post that he intended to file a civil suit against Q-Tip.

Burning Spear (real name: Winston Rodney) has announced an ambitious North American tour kicking off July 12 in New York and set to wrap Oct. 28 in New Orleans. The legendary reggae artist will perform over 70 shows with the Burning Band in support of his 34th album, "Calling Rastafari" (Heartbeat Records), which recently earned him his eighth Grammy nomination and his first award for best reggae album of the year.

For more information on the tour, visit the official Burning Spear Web site.

Underground rock duo Royal Trux has canceled seven shows on its current North American tour, due to an illness in the family of guitarist/vocalist Jennifer Herrema. All shows through a July 4 stop in Newport, Ky., have been scrapped, and the rest of the group's dates -- set to run through an Aug. 2 show in Vancouver -- are tentative, according to a statement from the group's label, Drag City.

The band intends to reschedule all the canceled shows, which come in support of its latest album for Drag City, "Pound For Pound."
