Bieber Biopic Director Drops Out

 

Davis Guggenheim has reportedly backed out of directing Justin Bieber's upcoming 3D biopic. According to Deadline, the filmmaker -- who is known for directing "An Inconvenient Truth," the documentary about Al Gore's campaign against global warming -- has decided to focus on promoting his next project, "Welcome to Superman." Meanwhile, Paramount Pictures is said to be searching for a new director to helm Bieber's film. (Deadline)

 

Mike Posner Celebrates Album Release with College Pals

 

Pop up-and-comer Mike Posner drew key industry players and a more than a few old friends to New York's Greenhouse on Tuesday night to celebrate the release of his debut album, "31 Minutes to Takeoff." RCA/Jive Label Group CEO Barry Weiss congratulated Posner on clocking one million downloads of his breakout single, "Cooler Than Me," while dozens of Posner's classmates from Duke University -- from where the singer just grauated in May -- cheered him on. Also there to toast Posner's success: Ke$ha and the man behind both of their hits, producer/songwriter Benny Blanco.

 

Bruce Springsteen to Premiere 'Darkness' Doc in Toronto

 

Bruce Springsteen has teamed up with filmmaker Thom Zimny on "The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town," a documentary about his classic 1978 album. The Boss will premiere the film Sept. 14 at the Toronto International Film Festival and appear with actor Edward Norton for a discussion. A spokesperson for Springsteen said he is also preparing the release of a "package" in conjunction with the documentary and that "further details will be announced when they are finalized."

 

Joe Perry Slams Tyler Perry for 'Idol' Talk

 

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry is apparently not happy with Steven Tyler vying to become the new "American Idol" judge. In an interview with The Boston Herald, Perry said he found out about the rumor "on the Internet like the rest of the world," and that he was surprised that Tyler never discussed the possible gig with the rest of the band. "Why so secretive? We're told it's a done deal," said Perry. "If Steven is committed to a TV show, that kind of affects the rest of us." (Boston Herald)


Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation Plot Joint Tour

 

Trip-hop Brits Massive Attack and production team Thievery Corporation have announced a North American co-headlining tour, according to SoundSpike.com. The fall trek will kick off October 18 in Montreal and run through Nov. 7. (SoundSpike.com)

 

El Guincho Sets 'Pop' Release Date

 

Barcelona pop artist El Guincho will release sophomore album "Pop Negro" on Sept. 14 via Young Turks. The disc follows 2007 debut "Alegranza!" as well as "Piratas de Sudamerica, Vol. 1," an EP of covers released last month. (Pitchfork)
