The Go-Go's, They Might Be Giants, and Eve 6 will be among the headliners playing during Sam Goody's Bandemonium talent search finals. Smack in the middle of the spring break season, the March 21 event at the Spinnaker Beach Club in Panama City, Fla., will also feature Blessid Union Of Souls, Vibrolush, Tin Star, and the competition's 1999 winner, Darwin's Waiting Room.
From more than 500 entries, the list of Bandemonium competitors has been whittled down to a final four through live events and online voting. Competing for the best unsigned band of 2001 crown will be Atlanta-based Lift, Houston's Mark Needs a Chick, Meaningless Tag from Philadelphia, and Hartford, Conn.'s SpaZjack.
Tipton, Iowa, elementary school music teacher Cassie Johnson resigned after superiors threatened to reprimand her for letting a group of students continue a research project on rapper Eminem. Administrators told Johnson to cancel the sixth graders' project after parents complained their child had found inappropriate material on the Internet. Principal Brian Krob declined to discuss details of the incident.
Johnson said she assigned different topics to the students after the parents' complaint but then allowed them to continue it after learning that students in another class were allowed to give a presentation on the same subject. She said the presentation didn't have any references to Eminem's lyrics, which contain obscenities and references to violence.
Johnson turned in her resignation to the Tipton school board on Feb. 16. The board accepted it last week after a 20-minute closed discussion.
Tonight's (March 5) First Amendment Center's Freedom Sings concert at the Bottom Line in New York has be postponed until June 20 due to hazardous weather conditions. As previously reported, the event was to feature Jefferson Airplane/Starship's Marty Balin and Paul Kantner, Janis Ian, and Tom Paxton.
Also rescheduled for June 20 is a conversation with Balin and Kantner on music and the ongoing battle for free expression, which was also originally due to be held today at the center. For more information, visit the First Amendment Center's official Web site.
