Billboard Bits: Aaron Neville, Collective Soul, Don Covay

Aaron Neville's first album of gospel-inspired music, "Devotion," will be released Sept. 26 on Tell It Records/EMI Gospel. The 12-track set combines original songs with hymns and new arrangements of such classics as Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," Cat Stevens' "Morning Has Broken," and Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Released." The album also includes "Singing You A Prayer," a duet with the artist's son, Ivan.

Neville will join John Fogerty and Dr. John on the Acura Music Festival beginning Saturday (Aug. 5) in West Palm Beach, Fla. Other confirmed dates Neville will play on the tour include Aug. 7 in Atlanta, Aug. 19 in Mansfield, Mass., Aug. 20 in Wantagh, N.Y., Aug. 21 in Vienna, Va., Sept. 1 in Tinley Park, Ill., and Sept. 3 in Englewood, Colo.

Collective Soul, which will release its fifth album, "Blender," Oct. 10 via Atlantic, will hit the road in North America with Creed beginning Sept. 10. The tour has not yet been fully mapped out as of yet, but confirmed dates show the two bands playing in California, Arizona, and Texas between Sept. 22-Oct. 4. Full Devil Jacket will also appear on the announced dates.

In related news, Collective Soul lead singer Ed Rolland will turn in a solo acoustic performance at the Atlanta Local Music Awards Aug. 9, the kick-off of the Atlantis Music Conference. Goodie Mob, Bill Mallonee & Vigilantes Of Love, and Peter Searcy are among the other acts slated to perform.

Legendary R&B songwriter Don Covay will release "Adlib," his first recorded work in 25 years, Sept. 18 via Chanhassen, Minn.-based blues label Cannonball Records. Billed as Don Covay & Friends, the album will feature the artist performing with a long list of cohorts, including Paul Rodgers, Wilson Pickett, Ann Peebles, Paul Shaffer, Anton Fig, Huey Lewis, Dan Penn, and Simon Kirke.

The cover artwork of the release is a signed portrait of Covay painted by Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood, while the liner notes feature comments by Van Morrison, Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and Bonnie Raitt.

The album was produced by Jon Tiven (B.B. King, Nick Lowe, Frank Black), who contributed liner notes for the 1994 Mercury compilation "Checkin' In With Don Covay," and features primarily new songs, along with a handful of his classics, including "Mercy Mercy" (with Rodgers) and "Three Time Loser" (with Pickett).
