Awards included Kenny G, for contemporary jazz artist; Krall's "When I Look In Your Eyes" (Verve), mainstream jazz album; Sample's "The Song Lives On" (GRP), contemporary jazz vocal album; Pat Metheny's "A Map Of The World" (Warner Bros.), soundtrack; and Miles Davis and John Coltrane's "The Complete Columbia Recordings 1955-1961" (Columbia/Legacy), boxed set.
Jarrett earned honors for top jazz pianist, mainstream jazz instrumentalist, and mainstream
jazz instrumental album for "The Melody At Night, With You" (ECM).
Additional awards were presented to the Rippingtons, contemporary jazz group; the various artists collection Jazz For A Rainy Afternoon, best jazz compilation; Davis, top jazz trumpeter; Michael Brecker, top jazz saxophonist; Metheny, top jazz guitarist; Charlie Haden, top jazz bassist; Jeff "Tain" Watts, top drummer; Paul Hardcastle, top jazz pianist/keyboard player; Chris Botti, top contemporary jazz trumpeter; and Norman Brown, top contemporary jazz guitarist.
The honors were based on sales from May 8, 1999, to April 29, 2000, tabulated by SoundScan.
Three special awards were presented based on voting by a panel of Billboard and BET experts, with additional input from the jazz industry. Krall was named best live performer, and Marc Cary was honored as best new artist. Herbie Hancock received a lifetime achievement award.
The awards, which closed the first Billboard/BET On Jazz conference, will air July 29 on BET On Jazz and BET.
