Bebe Leads Latin Grammy Nominations

Spanish singer/songwriter Bebe pulled off a surprise today (Aug. 23), netting a leading five nominations for the sixth Latin Grammys. Her nods include album of the year for her debut, "Pafuera Telaranas" (Virgin Records/EMI Music Spain), and record and song of the year for the single "Malo." Although Bebe's album has sold over 400,000 copies in Spain, according to EMI, in the United States it was released with barely a whimper, with neither the single or the album appearing on the Billboard charts.

Marc Anthony, Obie Bermudez, Juanes, JD Natasha and Aleks Syntek scored three nominations each. Reggaeton, the current Latin music fad, garnered a single nomination in the main categories: Daddy Yankee's "La Gasolina," produced by LunyTunes, received a nod for Record of the year.

By the same token, regional Mexican music, still the most commercially successful Latin genre in the country, was largely overlooked in the main categories. Only norteno band Intocable garnered a nod for best album for its double-disc set, "Diez."

Bermudez's nominations included best album for "Todo El Ano"(EMI) and song of the year for the title track. Another EMI act, Mexico's Aleks Syntek, also garnered song and record of the year nods for "Duele El Amor," a duet with Ana Torroja.

The Latin Grammys will be held Nov. 3 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The awards will air live on the Univision after previously being broadcast by CBS.
