EMI Music CEO Elio Leoni-Sceti says that "Beatlemania has returned" as the major celebrates a global sales success for the digitally remastered Beatles CD reissues.
Following the worldwide Sept. 9 release of the band's albums alongside stereo and mono box sets, EMI issued a statement detailing the impact of the reissues worldwide.
In retail outlets tracked by chart compilers, EMI said that in North America, Japan and the U.K., sales totaled more than 2.25 million copies of the albums in the first five days on sale.
"Beatlemania has returned, with fans new and old embracing these beautiful albums in their re-mastered and re-packaged forms," said Leoni-Sceti in a statement. "By putting the needs and desires of consumers first, the band are breaking new records around the world more than four decades after they first started recording. All of us at EMI Music are very proud to have been a part of this exciting project and to have delivered an insightful and globally executed marketing plan."
In addition to the previously reported success of the albums on the U.K. chart and Billboard's Comprehensive Albums, Pop Catalog and the Billboard 200, the reissues are dominating the charts around the world.
EMI said that in Japan all 14 re-mastered titles and boxed sets debuted in the top 25 of the international chart, with 840,000 albums moved in the first three days on sale.
In Canada, the Beatles have 15 of the top 20 catalog titles including all of the top 11, while the stereo box set is a new entry in the albums chart at No. 4 - the highest debut for a box set in Canada since Nielsen SoundScan started tracking sales. Cumulative sales across all titles were just under 160,000.
The albums have also done big business in Europe: All the reissues and box sets entered the French, Italian, Polish and Belgian charts, with all or most of the new releases entering the charts in Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, Austria, Portugal and Norway/
The Beatles has 14 titles in the Australian chart, while seven of the current top 10 in Argentina are Beatles reissues. In South Korea, the Beatles occupied 16 of the top 17 in the country's Hottracks album chart.
