On the final U.K. sales charts of the year in the U.K., Band Aid 20's "Do They Know It's Christmas" (Mercury) started a fourth week at No. 1 on the singles tally, while Robbie Williams' "Greatest Hits" (Chrysalis) held steady as Britain's favorite album.
With few new releases on Dec. 20, the new charts issued yesterday (Dec. 26) reflecting the Christmas sales week were relatively calm. The only top 10 newcomer on the singles survey was a new version of Phil Collins' 1984 hit "Against All Odds" by Steve Brookstein on Syco Music/BMG. Brookstein was the winner of the recent ITV talent contest "The X Factor."
The only other new entry in the top 40 was "Pow!" (Relentless/Virgin) by Lethal Bizzle at No. 11. The underground "grime" R&B dance hit of recent months comes from an artist previously with More Fire Crew, which had a No. 8 U.K. hit with "Oi" in 2002.
On the album chart, Williams retained supremacy ahead of the self-titled album from Il Divo (Syco Music/BMG), which held at No. 2 while "Scissor Sisters" (Polydor) rebounded 7-3. Westlife's "Allow Us To Be Frank" (S/BMG) climbed 9-6 and London R&B singer Lemar's second album, "Time To Grow" (Sony Music), improved 14-11.
The European picture is similar to that of the United Kingdom, as Williams' compilation returned to No. 1 on the European Top 100 Albums chart, which it topped for four weeks in late October and November. The Band Aid 20 track rises 2-1 on the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles tally.
