Ball, Slim, Campbell Lead Blues Award Nominees

Singer-pianist Marcia Ball, guitarist Magic Slim and the late vocalist-guitarist Little Milton Campbell lead nominees for the 2006 Blues Music Awards with four nominations apiece.

The awards -- formerly known as the W.C. Handy Awards, and renamed to bring broader visibility to the music -- will be presented by the Memphis-based non-profit Blues Foundation on May 11 at the Cook Convention Center in downtown Memphis.

Singers Shemekia Copeland and Bobby Rush, guitarist Hubert Sumlin, and harp player Kim Wilson each scored three nominations apiece.

Up for the B.B. King Entertainer of the Year award -- named this year for the blues guitar legend -- are Campbell, Rush, Slim, Ball and guitarist Buddy Guy. Band of the year nominees are the Fabulous Thunderbirds, the Holmes Brothers, Little Charlie & the Nightcats, Rod Piazza & the Mighty Flyers and Magic Slim & the Teardrops.

Competing for album of the year are Sumlin's "About Them Shoes," Slim's "Anything Can Happen," Nick Moss & the Flip Tops' "Sadie Mae," the Mannish Boys' "That Represent Man" and Campbell's "Think of Me."
