Baaba Maal, Stevie Wonder To Perform At United Nations

Senegalese musician Baaba Maal, Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, and Spanish tenor Jose Carreras are among the artists confirmed to perform June 4 at a United Nations gala to honor the humanitarian efforts of the Children Uniting Nations campaign. The event will be held in New York on the eve of World Environment Day, and is expected to draw dignitaries from across the world.

Children Uniting Nations aims to "bring support and attention to the 30 million child environmental refugees throughout the world." In conjunction with World Environment Day, United Nations field offices will coordinate local tree-planting campaigns.

Maal -- whose latest album, "Live At Royal Festival Hall," was also released as a Palm Pictures DVD -- has long helped draw attention to humanitarian issues in his native Senegal, including the ritual of female circumcision.
