An autopsy performed on the exhumed body of Tammy Wynette showed the country singer died last year of natural causes. According to published reports, Nashville Medical Examiner Bruce Levy found that heart failure brought about by damage from repeated blood clots was the cause of death, although the role that drugs may have played in the passing was impossible to determine. Traces of various sedatives were found in the singer's body.
The exhumation and autopsy were prompted by a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit filed by Wynette's four daughters, who claimed negligence on the part of Wynette's fifth husband, George Richey, and the artist's doctor, Wallis Marsh. Richey was later dropped from the lawsuit.
Wynette, who died at age 55, had 20 No. 1 country hits. She had had health problems for much of her life.
