Australian Acts To 'Reach Out To Asia'

The Australian entertainment community will rally together to help victims of the Dec. 26 earthquake and tsunami with an all-star concert and telethon set for Saturday (Jan. 8). Reach Out to Asia will feature performances from the likes of Kasey Chambers and "Australian Idol" winners Guy Sebastian and Casey Donovan in the Forecourt outside of the Sydney Opera House.

Members of five different Australian rock acts -- Jet vocalist Nic Cester, the Living End guitarist Chris Cheney, You Am I guitarist Dave Lane, Spiderbait drummer Mark "Kram" Maher and Dallas Crane bassist Pat Bourke -- will team up to create a one-off supergroup for the show. Noiseworks, the 1980s Jon Stevens-fronted rock act, is also planning to reunite specifically for the event.

Others set to perform include the Dissociatives (Silverchair's Daniel Johns and producer Paul Mac), Killing Heidi, Eskimo Joe, Alex Lloyd, the Whitlams, Scribe and Missy Higgins.

Hosted by Australian television personalities David Koch, Melissa Doyle and Larry Emdur, the Sydney portion of the fundraiser will be broadcast on radio and by all three Australian commercial television networks along with a telethon originating from the Telstra Dome in Melbourne. Proceeds will benefit the victims of the tragedy via the Tsunami Relief Appeal.

Most tickets for the concert are sold out, although a note on the Ticketmaster 7 Web site reports that a limited amount of additional tickets will go on sale tomorrow (Jan. 5).

In related news, a Hong Kong charity event staged Sunday night and broadcast locally by TVB featured Andy Lau, Nicholas Tse, Leon Lai, Aaron Kwok, Leo Koo and Alan Tam and raised more than $6.2 million, according to published reports.
