Broken Social Scene side project Apostle Of Hustle will release its second album, "National Anthem of Nowhere," March 6 via Arts and Crafts. Led by Broken Social Scene guitarist Andrew Whiteman, the record finds the group expanding in players and sound, and includes contributions from BSS members Martin Kinack, Evan Cranley and Lisa Lobsinger.

"Writing takes place for all touring musicians in that both lovely and irritating part of the day known as 'soundcheck,'" Whiteman tells Billboard.com. "A lot of ideas started there. But we just had to be relentless about it and fill the holes between Broken Social Scene tours and Feist tours."

The actual recording took place at Whiteman's bedroom, Masterkut studios in Montreal, then The Party Studio in Montreal and back to his bedroom. Everybody reconvened at The Party "for scotch and mixing."

"Marty [Kinack] and I produced, and we had some specific ideas -- better use of percussion, shorter songs, louder vocals," Whiteman explains. "Plus I am a self-admitted 'world music' geek and there are incredible things happening out there we want to be a part of. I'm sure that influence asserted itself."

Indeed, a few cuts are sung entirely in Spanish, like "Fast Pony for Victor Jara" and "Rafaga!," which provide the "world" feel Whiteman describes. Cuban-style guitar sounds are much more evident as well, putting a new spin on the layered indie rock Whiteman purveys in Broken Social Scene.

Tour plans are shaping up, with a few slots already scheduled as openers for Michael Franti & Spearhead. While there are no immediate plans for Broken Social Scene to head back to the studio, Whiteman says "our rough plan is to hook up again in the late fall. Dave [Newfield] will have his new studio up and running by then and we will head out to Trenton and hit it."
