Afro-Celts Plant A New 'Seed'

The Afro-Celt Sound System has finalized the details of its fourth Real World Records Album. "Seed," due March 25, is the group's first effort to be put out under the streamlined name the Afro Celts, and will feature guest shots from experimental bassist Jah Wobble, Irish fiddler Eileen Ivers, and flamenco guitarist Jesse Cook, among others.

"Seed" reportedly finds the genre-jumping U.K.-based collective further exploring acoustic and organic instrumentation. The 10-track set was recorded in London with principals Simon Emmerson (guitar), James McNally (keyboards), Iarla O'Lionaird (vocals), and Martin Russell (keyboards, programming), yet as is the group's norm, the number of musicians on each track often rises into double digits. Irish singer Mundy, and backing vocalists Valerie Etienne and Michelle John-Douglas (Ms. Dynamite) are among the higher-profile contributors.

An Afro Celts tour is currently being planned for later this fall, but beforehand, O'Lionaird is due to perform in March at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas. In 2001, the Afro Celts toured with the Dave Matthews Band.

The group's 2001 album, "Volume 3: Further in Time," debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top World Music Albums chart and has sold 147,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
