Adele, PJ Harvey Nominated for U.K.'s Mercury Prize

Adele, PJ Harvey and Tinie Tempah are among the artists whose albums are nominated for the Barclayard Mercury Prize, which honors the best British album of the year. The albums included in this year's shortlist were announced during a ceremony at the Hospital Club in London on Tuesday (July 19).

Among the 12 nominees are Adele's "21," which is the best-selling album of the year and currently tops the U.K. albums chart; "Disc-Overy" by U.K. rapper Tinie Tempah, who scored a Hot 100 hit with "Written in the Stars" this spring; electronic artist James Blake's acclaimed self-titled debut; PJ Harvey's "Let England Shake," her first album in four years; and "On a Mission" by rising British pop star Katy B. According to NME, Adele and PJ Harvey are currently joint favorites to win the £20,000 prize, which will be announced on Sept. 6.

The xx's "XX" took home the Mercury Prize last year, while albums by Arctic Monkeys, Portishead and Dizzee Rascal have all been honored since the first award was presented in 1992. Albums by Harvey and rock group Elbow, whose latest album "Build a Rocket Boys!" is also on this year's shortlist, have previously won the Mercury Prize.
