God Help The Girl, "God Help The Girl"

by Jillian Mapes  |   August 11, 2009 12:44 EDT

"God help the girl, she needs all the help she can get," croons Catherine Ireton on the title track of the Stuart Murdoch-helmed soundtrack, "God Help The Girl." But Murdoch, who serves as the frontman for Belle & Sebastian, needs no help on his latest endeavor -- a quintessential pop film score that features a cast of angelic female singers who do their best 1960s girl group impersonations. The catch? The musical doesn't begin production until 2010. The time lapse is confusing for listeners of the narrative, which focuses on a young woman named Eve. But Murdoch, who lends his vocals to two of the album's 14 tracks, plays his strengths as the man behind the music. He'll be sure to captivate Belle & Sebastian fans with sultry, orchestral-tinged versions of "Funny Little Frog" and "Act of the Apostle II," which can be found on the band's 2006 album "The Life Pursuit." --Jillian Mapes
